It is hard to be trans in Texas, and even harder to be working class and trans and BIPOC in Austin–if the reactionary legislation and culture isn’t trying to kill us, the rising cost of living is. Anormalidad is a trans & queer, majority-BIPOC housing community of 17 that is building sanctuary and community in Austin, Texas in the face of gentrification, displacement, and fascist violence. Now our community needs your support in order to build some stability and enable us to focus on our longterm work.
Anormalidad has been a life-changing sanctuary for its members in the heart of one of the fastest-gentrifying cities in the country. Our cooperative advocated towards and received a rent-controlled lease for our starter housing location. As of September 2023 we expanded to a second housing location and are excited to see our community grow. Both houses practice a radically redistributive, sliding-scale rent structure that has kept many of us from becoming unhoused or displaced from Austin. We have seen too many of our friends, family, and community leave because of the precarity, isolation, and rising violence we face.
To resist these pressures, we’ve developed a plan to grow our community into a permanent home for QTBIPOC autonomy. Over the next few years we hope to collectively buy a house in the city, to continue building housing stability and community in Austin, and buy land in the surrounding area, to grow food and offer a refuge from the pressures of city life.
To get there, we need your support achieving some immediate financial stability. Many members of our houses struggle with low wages & debt, living paycheck to paycheck, or with unemployment. These struggles take both material and emotional tolls on us, and put our cooperative into a precarious position. We are asking for funds to help sustain our collective and build the stable foundation we need to make our long-term vision a reality. Your donations will contribute to:
-
- Keeping up with rent & utilities
- Groceries & food security
- Investing in our members urgent needs such as: paying off debts, physical & mental health care, car repairs, gender transition care, taking time off work or to transition jobs, and more.
We hope to grow this community into one where we can rely fully on ourselves, our communities, and the Earth instead of the systems that are destroying us. We want our homes to be a place where we can grow our own food, heal from our trauma, dive into our passions, care for each other, fight for our communities, and raise the next generation.
